Learning to ride a bike is one of those things that comes more easily the more you let go. When my grandpa taught me to ride a bike without training wheels, I recall the unexpected rush and alertness that came from my amazement at not falling as well as the What do I do now? uncertainty that loomed as I neared the end of the soft, grassy yard. I don't remember how the short ride ended--a controlled application of coaster brakes or a less-controlled skid back to the earth--and it's not important. But I do remember the ride, my own safety net pulling himself away and my takeover of control. And while I probably had my own reservations about riding without two extra wheels at my side, I'm sure he never had a doubt.
